Republic Australia Smokey BBQ Sauce is a bold, sweet and smoky all-purpose barbecue sauce with a thick, dark profile made for the foods that call for a proper traditional BBQ sauce. Tomato paste provides the familiar BBQ base, honey adds another layer of sweetness, and spices and vegetables round it out into a rich sauce that works equally well from the bottle or over the grill.
This is the more traditionally smoky sauce in the Republic range. It suits pork ribs, chicken wings, brisket, burgers and sausages, but it is just as useful as a dipping sauce for chips or alongside a steak. It also works surprisingly well as a BBQ-style pizza base when you want something richer and smokier than tomato sauce.
There is plenty of sweetness in the formulation, so it develops a sticky glaze quickly when heated. That makes it excellent for finishing ribs and chicken, but it is better brushed on towards the later stages of cooking rather than exposed to strong direct heat for the entire cook.
Flavour Profile
Expect a full-bodied traditional BBQ flavour with:
- Pronounced smoky character
- Plenty of sweetness
- Tomato richness
- A touch of honey
- Savoury spice underneath
- No chilli-forward heat
It is richer and smokier than a simple tomato-based barbecue sauce, making it particularly suited to grilled and smoked meats.
If you prefer a sweeter, more honey-forward sauce, try Republic Honey BBQ Sauce.

| Food |
Why It Works |
| Pork ribs |
Sweetness and smoke are natural partners for pork, and the sauce cooks down into a sticky glaze. For a sweeter pork profile, try it over Republic Cherry Apple Chicken & Pork Seasoning and finish with Smokey BBQ Sauce later in the cook. |
| Brisket & beef ribs |
The stronger smoky flavour can stand up to rich smoked beef without disappearing. For brisket or beef ribs, pair it with Republic Signature Beef Seasoning when you want a deeper savoury beef profile before finishing with the sauce. |
| Chicken wings |
Excellent brushed on towards the end of the cook for a sweet, smoky, sticky coating. |
| Pulled pork |
Mix through pulled pork or serve alongside it for extra sweetness and smoke. |
| Burgers |
Gives beef burgers that familiar smoky BBQ sauce flavour without needing several condiments. |
| Sausages |
Easy table sauce for snags straight from the BBQ. |
| Steak |
Serve on the side when you want a sweet and smoky alternative to steak sauce. |
| Chips & wedges |
Thick enough to work as a dipping sauce straight from the bottle. |
| BBQ pizza |
Use as the sauce base for BBQ chicken, pulled pork or meat-lover style pizzas. |
How to Use
Shake well before use.
Use Smokey BBQ Sauce straight from the bottle as a dipping or table sauce, or brush it onto meat during cooking.
Ribs, Wings & Chicken
For ribs, wings and other glazed meats, apply the sauce during the later part of the cook.
Sugar is the first ingredient and the sauce also contains honey, so it will thicken, darken and become sticky fairly quickly over heat. Adding it later gives you time to build a glossy glaze without leaving the sugars over strong heat long enough to burn.
Brush on a layer, allow it to set, then add another light coat if you want a heavier glaze.
Low & Slow BBQ
Use it as a finishing sauce on pork ribs, beef ribs, brisket or pulled pork. It can also be served alongside smoked meats so everyone can add as much or as little as they want.
Direct Grilling
For chicken, burgers or sausages cooked directly over the grill, wait until the food is nearly cooked before brushing on sauce. This gives the sauce time to warm and cling without exposing its sugars to intense heat for too long.
As a Pizza Base
Spread it over the pizza base in place of traditional tomato sauce for BBQ chicken, pulled pork or meat pizzas. Its sweetness and smoke work particularly well with chicken, bacon, onion and melted cheese.

FAQs
Is Republic Smokey BBQ Sauce very sweet?
It is definitely on the sweeter side of traditional BBQ sauce. Sugar is the first ingredient and honey adds further sweetness, balanced by tomato, smoke and savoury spices.
When should I put it on ribs?
Add it during the later stages of the cook. The sauce contains plenty of sugar, so it will glaze and darken quickly once exposed to heat.
Can I use it as a dipping sauce?
Yes. It works straight from the bottle with chips, wedges, sausages, burgers or chicken.
Can I use it on steak?
Yes. Rather than coating a steak before a hard sear, serve the sauce on the side or add it after cooking. That lets you keep a good seared crust while still getting the sweet, smoky BBQ flavour.
Can I use it on pizza?
Yes. Try it as the base sauce for BBQ chicken, pulled pork or meat-lover style pizzas.
