How to Light Charcoal

Lighting charcoal can be simple and efficient when done the right way. Follow these steps to get your charcoal ready for grilling, smoking, or cooking in no time:

1. Gather Your Supplies

  • Charcoal chimney starter
  • Charcoal (lump or briquettes)
  • Firelighters or crumpled newspaper
  • A lighter or match

2. Prepare the Chimney Starter

  • Place your charcoal chimney starter on a heat-resistant surface or directly on the grill grates.
  • Fill the bottom section with crumpled newspaper or place 2-3 firelighters underneath.

3. Add the Charcoal

  • Fill the top section of the chimney starter with your desired amount of charcoal.

4. Ignite the Firelighters or Newspaper

  • Light the firelighters or newspaper through the vents at the bottom of the chimney starter.
  • Allow the flames to ignite the charcoal gradually.

5. Wait for the Charcoal to Heat

  • Let the charcoal heat up for about 10-15 minutes. You'll know it's ready when the top coals are glowing red, and the edges are covered in white ash.

6. Pour and Arrange the Charcoal

  • Using heat-resistant gloves, carefully pour the hot charcoal into your grill or smoker.
  • Arrange the coals as needed for direct or indirect cooking.

7. Start Cooking

  • Place your cooking grate over the hot charcoal, and you're ready to start grilling or smoking.
