Caring For Your Chopping Board

🔪 Why Chopping Board Care Matters

Wooden and end grain chopping boards are durable, but they need proper care to prevent warping, cracking, and bacterial buildup. 🦠 Regular maintenance not only extends the life of your board but also ensures food safety and keeps your board looking its best. ✨

🧼 How to Clean Your Chopping Board

1️⃣ Hand Wash Only – No Dishwashers! ❌

Never put your wooden chopping board in the dishwasher. 🚫💦 The high heat and moisture can cause warping and splitting.

2️⃣ Use Mild Soap & Warm Water 💧

  • 🫧 Rinse the board with warm water.
  • 🧴 Apply a small amount of mild dish soap.
  • 🧽 Scrub with a soft sponge or brush.
  • 🚿 Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately.

3️⃣ Sanitize with Vinegar or Lemon & Salt 🍋🧂

  • 🦠 To kill bacteria naturally, wipe the board with white vinegar or sprinkle it with coarse salt and rub it with a cut lemon.
  • ⏳ Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse and dry.

🛡️ How to Prevent Warping & Cracking

1️⃣ Keep It Dry ☀️

  • 🧻 After washing, wipe the board with a clean towel.
  • 📏 Stand it upright to air dry completely before storing.

2️⃣ Avoid Excess Moisture 🌊

Never soak your board in water, as this can cause it to absorb moisture and warp. 🚫💦

3️⃣ Store It Properly 🏠

  • 📦 Keep your chopping board in a dry, well-ventilated area.
  • ☀️ Avoid direct sunlight or placing it near heat sources.

🧴 Using Board Butter to Protect Your Chopping Board

🍯 What is Board Butter?

Board Butter is a premium blend of food-grade oils and natural beeswax 🐝 that nourishes and protects wooden chopping boards. It restores moisture, prevents cracking, and keeps your board looking like new. ✨

🛠️ How to Apply Board Butter

  1. Ensure the board is completely dry before application.
  2. 🖐️ Use a soft cloth or paper towel to apply a small amount of Board Butter to the surface.
  3. 🌀 Rub it in using circular motions, covering all areas, including the edges.
  4. ⏳ Let the board absorb the treatment for a few hours (or overnight for deep conditioning).
  5. 🧼 Wipe off any excess and buff with a clean cloth for a smooth finish.

✨ Pro Tip: Apply Board Butter once a month or whenever the wood starts looking dry or dull.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using Too Much Water – Excess moisture weakens the wood over time.
  • Not Oiling Regularly – Lack of conditioning can cause cracking and dullness.
  • Cutting on Both Sides – Always designate one side for cutting and the other for serving to prolong its life.

Owner, Sydney BBQs. Helping Australians cook over charcoal since 2019.

My passion for charcoal cooking started long before Sydney BBQs. Some of my earliest memories, from around six years old, are family picnics and weekend BBQs where charcoal was always at the centre of bringing everyone together. I loved the food so much that I'd eat until I was completely full and have to lie down.

By the time I was 17, I was hosting my own BBQs, inviting school friends over every chance I got. That passion never faded. Over the years it grew into an obsession with learning different cooking styles, experimenting with charcoal, fire and smoke, and exploring traditional BBQ techniques from around the world.

In 2019, my wife Suzie and I founded Sydney BBQs to share that passion with others. Since then, we've helped thousands of Australians find the right BBQ for their backyard while continuing to test, use and stand behind the products we sell. From Argentine parrillas and Cyprus grills to smokers, pizza ovens and charcoal BBQs, if it's on our website, there's a good chance I've cooked on it myself.

My goal is simple: to help people cook better food over fire and create the same memories around the BBQ that inspired me as a kid.
